MADCAP: The Model For Advanced Capacity Planning

TeleChoice has the capability and a flexible framework for performing modeling of network capacity or network components and demand for network capacity.

In modeling network capacity, TeleChoice uses a bottom-up approach based on a detailed analysis of existing network and/or different network architectures. This modeling capability helps service providers and vendors to conduct discrete analysis of and understand the financial and operational implications of different architectures on specific networks. In modeling demand for network capacity, TeleChoice uses a top-down approach taking into consideration population/user densities, assumptions of adoption, and usage patterns.

Future Scenario Planning

TeleChoice created a tool that enables the user to apply different assumptions about demand and supply drivers (e.g., business and consumer adoption of new broadband technologies and implementation of new transport technologies such as denser DWDM, OC-768, CWDM, and others) and to understand the resulting impact on demand for lit transport capacity, supply of lit capacity, and demand for dark fiber on a route-by-route basis. The model also has the capability to translate the resulting network demand impact into demand for different types of CO or POP equipment and the configuration of the equipment. Using the bottom-up methodology in calculating the demand forecasts for the types, configurations, and number of equipment required to support the demand for specific broadband and transport services, the resultant output of this MADCAP capability provided some key inputs to interactive business case tools and ROI calculators. This integration created a powerful tool that helps in forecasting and in quantifying return on investment, cost savings, breakeven points, profitability, and other financial parameters. The MADCAP Report: U.S. Telecom Transport Supply and Demand
Written in August 2001, this report analyzes the supply and demand of network capacity on a route-by-route basis between major cities in the United States using MADCAP. It analyzes a number of supply and demand scenarios and concludes that there isn't a bandwidth glut. The analysis finds that 63 percent of the fiber routes between top U.S. cities are at or near full capacity. Other key findings include the following:
